Deception island is one of the South Shetland islands, on the outer edge of the peninsula of Antartica. It is still an active volcano even though it has now collapsed after multiple eruptions. Its crater is now a caldera which offered a safe harbour to whalers, before becoming a scientific base... and finally being returned to nature after one last eruption in 1969. Until the next one.
